The Batman director Matt Reeves confirms an easy-to-miss Riddler detail that takes place in an early scene of the film. The Batman offered a detective-noir spin on one of the biggest comic-book heroes of all time and saw Robert Pattinson take on Bruce Wayne/Batman as audiences follow him through his second year as Gotham’s Caped Crusader. The Batman drew inspiration from beloved comics such as The Long Halloween and Year Onewith Reeves’ DC debut enjoying enormous success at the box office, having grossed more than $750 million worldwide.
Alongside Pattinson, The Batman boasts a star-studded lineup that includes the likes of Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman, Colin Farrell as Penguin, Jeffrey Wright as Jim Jordon, and Andy Serkis as Alfred. The blockbuster also saw Paul Dano star as the film’s antagonist, Riddler, a relentless killer with a particular hatred for the Wayne family. Throughout the film, Riddler taunts Batman with various clues and puzzles that accompany his various murders. The story culminates with his eventual capture, which is revealed to be part of his grand plan.
Reeves has now taken to Twitter to confirm a particularly interesting Riddler detail that is teased in the early moments of the film. In response to a tweet, Reeves confirmed that Riddler can be seen in a small, lit window which overlooks the Iceberg lounge at around the 31-minute mark of The Batman. Reeves replied to the tweet, sharing that he can”100%“confirm that the mysterious figure is Riddler. The tweet prompted much excitement from fans, who were impressed by this very subtle detail. Check out Reeves’ tweet below.
The scene, which takes places shortly after Batman’s first meeting with Farrell’s Penguin and Kravitz’s Selina Kyle/Catwoman, is an early tease for a reveal which then arrives in the final act. It is later discovered that Riddler had been residing in a hotel building with a perfect view of the entrance of the Iceberg Lounge. Since The Batman‘s initial release, many have praised Dano’s take on Riddler, with the actor having put a darker, more terrifying spin on the character. However, Jim Carrey who previously played the Riddler in batman forever, recently shared that he had mixed emotions about Dano’s portrayal of the character, with Carrey himself having stayed more true to the somewhat camp, less serious traits of the original comic book villain.
This excellent detail from Reeves certainly highlights some of the intricate planning that went on behind the scenes while creating The Batman. Subtle details such as this are frequently sought out and praised by audiences, as they can often lay a trail for what is come in the film’s final act; and this nod to Riddler’s base is certainly no exception. With Reeves set to return for The Batman 2which is currently in its very early stages, audiences will likely be hoping for more subtle hints such as this The Batman Easter egg in the future.
