Stray, PlayStation’s Anticipated First Person Cat Game, Gets a Leaked Release Date

PlayStation’s highly-anticipated cyberpunk first-person cat puzzler stray might finally have a release date.

stray, a game that puts players in the perspective of a backpack-adorned cat wandering desolated streets and solving puzzles, looks to be on track to make its summer 2022 arrival. Twitter user PlayStation Game Size discovered the potential date while searching the PlayStation database. According to them, the proposed launch date for stray appears to be July 19th, 2022, with a release time of 8 AM PT. However, as PlayStation Game Size notes, this could just be a placeholder for now. There has been no official announcement.

In stray, players navigate the gloomy streets of a dank, cyberpunk-inspired metropolis while using the world and their cat-like reflexes to solve puzzles as they attempt to find their way back home. Players can jump from precarious ledges, defying gravity like actual cats, and pick up valuable items along the way. They can even knock over objects, emulating real cats. Some of the puzzles included one where the player must use a small bucket to disable a fan and another where they use a can of paint to break open a window.

Although stray is heavily logic and puzzle-based, the game features NPC encounters and a rich environment to explore. Players must complete side quests to come NPCs to open up new travel paths or other bonuses to complete their adventure. The metropolis is mainly populated by robots, which the cat protagonist can interact with through B-12, its small drone companion. Not only does B-12 act as a translator for the stray cat, but the drone also doubles as a weapon the player can employ against rat-like creatures. When not in use, B-12 shrinks down into a small backpack the stray wears.

stray was delayed last year to an early 2022 release. Reportedly, the developers made the decision to take more time to perfect the game, as well as for the team’s well-being amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Since the game missed its early 2022 release window, there has been no word on development or a new launch window until now. In the meantime, players might enjoy Dog’s Life as a substitute to tide them over.

Developed by BlueTwelve Studio and published by Annapurna Interactive, stray will be available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and PC on July 19th, 2022.
