Sonic 2 Shows Off Idris Elba as Sexy Knuckles in Fastest Trailer Ever

An official, lightning-fast trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 features Idris Elba’s “sexy” Knuckles, a 3D render of “Sanic” and other oddities.

Paramount Pictures’ Sonic the Hedgehog 2 just dropped the fastest trailer, ever — and there are a number of little oddities hidden within.

On its official YouTube channel, Paramount posted what it dubs to be the “Fastest Trailer” for sonic 2. The video runs at two and a half minutes long, though the trailer itself accounts for less than two seconds of that. The super sped-up trailer plays after a countdown. It is followed by an end screen featuring the film’s title and release date, which holds for over two minutes. Paramount promises a “regular speed” trailer will drop tomorrow, March 14.

The “Fastest Trailer” does feature what appears to be actual footage from sonic 2including looks at the duo of Sonic the Hedgehog (Ben Schwartz) and Miles “Tails” Prower (Colleen O’Shaughnessey), as well as newcomer Knuckles the Echidna (Idris Elba), Shemar Moore’s mystery character and a version of Doctor Robotnik ( Jim Carrey) who has seemingly been supercharged by the Master Emerald.

However, spliced throughout the lightning-fast clip are also a number of bizarre images that are most likely not in the final film. For instance, Elba is seen posing seductively while sporting Knuckles’ trademark white gloves — an apparent reference to the actor’s previous comment that the red echidna’s voice would not be “sexy.” Similarly, Schwartz is seen wearing Sonic’s trademark red shoes, which are comically oversized.

There’s also what appears to be a 3D render of “Sanic,” a poorly-drawn version of Sonic that has gained prominence as an internet meme over the years and was even referenced in Paramount’s first Sonic the Hedgehog movie from 2020. Speaking of, the trailer also takes the time to further denounce Paramount’s original design for Sonic. The now-infamous first trailer for the 2020 film was pulled and replaced following backlash over Sonic’s design, with the movie being delayed so Sonic’s model could be replaced with a more video game-accurate version.

Paramount’s first sonic film was ultimately a success following its release in February 2020, making $319.7 million worldwide against a reported budget of $85–90 million and being met mostly positive reception. sonic 2 will likely seek to capitalize on that when it hits theaters next month. Paramount is currently planning for the future of the franchise, having already greenlit a third sonic film, as well as a Paramount+ spinoff series starring Elba’s Knuckles.
