NFL insider Ian Rapoport, speaking on NFL Network’s NFL Total Access, provided an update on the status of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. And the update is that there isn’t an update. While many hope a trade is imminent, Rapoport says that isn’t the case.
The 49ers are reportedly in discussions with teams. However, most believe that San Francisco is seeking more than what potential trade partners are willing to offer.
The Pittsburgh Steelers were the betting favorite to land Garoppolo until it was announced that they agreed to terms on a deal with Mitchell Trubisky.
“The Pittsburgh Steelers were involved in Jimmy Garoppolo trade talks with the San Francisco 49ers,” Rapoport said. “Obviously, that’s not going to happen now.”
With the Carolina Panthers and New Orleans Saints expected to chase Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson, that leaves the Indianapolis Colts as the new favorite to land Garoppolo. However, Rapoport notes that “nothing is imminent” on that front.
NFL teams must be at or below the $208.2 million salary cap by Wednesday, the start of the new league year. The 49ers are currently about $9.6 million over that number, per OverTheCap. Trading Garoppolo would save San Francisco over $25 million.

Rapoport: Jimmy Garoppolo surgery could force 49ers to delay trade
San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch, possibly downplaying the impact of the development, said the shoulder procedure that Jimmy Garoppolo will undergo was described to him as “a minor surgery.” Obviously, the 49ers are hoping for a quick and full recovery. Most expected San Francisco to trade Garoppolo in the coming weeks, and Lynch, speaking from the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, says that there is interest in the quarterback, and discussions are taking place. However, news of the surgery could complicate things. “Any time you have surgery, it’s not a minor deal,” Lynch said via Kirk Larrabee. “Any time it’s the throwing shoulder, I

Commanders trade for Carson Wentz; Colts could be ‘in the mix’ for 49ers’ Jimmy Garoppolo
As expected, the quarterback-needy Washington Commanders have traded for a new signal-caller. No, it’s not San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. 49ers fielding several calls for Jimmy Garoppolo; Colts have ‘significant interest’
Everyone assumes Jimmy Garoppolo will be the next big-name quarterback to switch NFL teams this offseason. The San Francisco 49ers are working on trading him, offloading his hefty salary, and declaring last year’s No. 3 overall pick, Trey Lance, the starter for 2022 and beyond. Aaron Rodgers is staying with the Green Bay Packers. The Seattle Seahawks traded Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos. Even Carson Wentz has a new home. The Indianapolis Colts traded him to the Washington Commanders. “I’d say things have heated up pretty quickly for the San Francisco 49ers and Jimmy Garoppolo,” Ian Rapoport said on NFL Network (h/t Rohan Chakravarthi). “They’ve fielded several calls from teams interested in potentially trading for their starter this past season.
