Marvel Cinematic Universe fans are convinced that a key character has been digitally removed from the Thor: Love and Thunder teaser trailer.
Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe suspect that a key character has been edited out of the Thor: Love and Thunder teaser trailer.
The shot in question appears at the 37-second mark of the video, shortly after the section where the Guardians of the Galaxy are seen leaving Thor and Korg behind on a debris-ridden platform. Many fans have pointed to the framing of the scene, which appears to be too wide to show just two characters. Some are suggesting that the extra length of the frame and the empty space next to Thor is evidence that Marvel Studios has digitally removed a character from the trailer.
While there’s currently no consensus on the identity of the mystery character, audiences are speculating that it could be either an established MCU face or someone entirely new. Returning figures may include Lady Sif and Loki while some believe the spot to belong to Beta Ray Bill, who was previously teased in Thor: Ragnarok. Some fans think it’s Jane Foster’s Mighty Thor, a character familiar to the Thor franchise that has been dramatically reinterpreted for Love and Thunder.
Marvel Studios has a history of editing out key parts of its films out of trailers to avoid spoiling important moments. The trailer for Avengers: Infinity War was altered to add Hulk in what was seemingly a climactic sequence of the movie; in the final cut, Hulk only appears in the movie’s opening moments. Spider-Man: No Way Home was similar in that a shot was edited to remove Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire’s Wall-Crawlers who were heavily rumored to make an appearance in the multiversal adventure.
Set after the events of Avengers: Endgame, Thor’s latest big-screen adventure will see the god of thunder begin upon a journey of self-discovery. Seeking enlightenment and fulfillment in his retirement from “superheroing,” Thor is interrupted by the sinister Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), a powerful being that seeks to eliminate all gods in the known universe. Along his journey, Thor will spend some time traveling alongside the Guardians of the Galaxy, even inheriting a new wardrobe to symbolize his stint with the Ravagers.
Fans looking to join their favorite Asgardian on another adventure don’t have to wait much longer. Thor: Love and Thunder crashes into theaters on July 8.
