There was a time when Kaley Cuoco was on one of the biggest network sitcoms around, having more than a decade-long run on The Big Bang Theory on CBS which consistently was at the top of the Nielsen ratings. Well, when that went off the air it didn’t take long for her to pivot to a new series, this one on HBO Max where it’s currently number one on streamer in the United States. With the second season releasing its first couple of episodes this past week, fans were quick to tune back into the quirky black comedy that’s developed quite the audience.

In The Flight Attendant, Kaley Cuoco plays Cassie Bowden, who when we first meet her is employed in the titular position and struggling with a number of different personal demons. She drinks too much, sleeps with strangers, and essentially just jet sets into new landing spots for her troubles. But things take a turn when one of her tries ends with her waking up in bed in Bangkok only to find a dead body next to her. It starts a spiral of events that ends up including government conspiracies, international relationships, covert agencies, the CIA, and her own employer. It’s a winding tale that is carried by Cuoco’s considerable charm while she also handles a character that has significant issues. There’s a reason the series works on a couple of different levels. Check out Kaley Cuoco in the trailer for the second season of The Flight Attendant.

The Flight Attendant is, in part, based on the novel of the same name by Chris Bohjaian. The bones of the series are similar to the plot of the book, but there are considerable liberties taken and things really do start diverging from the original piece of writing. Some of that is by design and some is because this series significantly expands on the story. We are able to meet more people in and around Kaley Cuoco’s character with the show developed specifically for a longer run on the small screen. The original book just wasn’t going to lay the groundwork for the same path.

Joining Kaley Cuoco in The Flight Attendant is an eclectic group of characters. Zosia Mamet plays her best friend Annie and TR Knight is her brother Davey, a character who gets a continued story in the second season. And it’s here that we’ll meet Cassie’s mother Lisa who is played by Sharon Stone. Much of the story centers on Cassie’s (and to some degree Davey’s) childhood as being the root of some of their issues. Stone’s Lisa is someone we see in the trailer and the reunion doesn’t look like all hugs and warmth.

The Flight Attendant has garnered significant critical acclaim for its first season with multiple nominations at the Primetime Emmy Awards. It was put up for Outstanding Comedy Series, as well as both Oustanding Writing and Outstanding Directing as well. Plus, Kaley Cuoco was nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a comedy series. She lost o Jean Smart from hacks, another HBO offering. The first season of The Flight Attendant scored a whopping 90% on Rotten Tomatoes with critics praising the writing, tone, and of course the star turn by Kaley Cuoco.

But the small screen isn’t the only place where Kaley Cuoco is going to make her bones. She’s set to star in the Patrick Hughes-helmed The Man From Toronto which will also star Ellen Barkin, Woody Harrelson, Kevin Hart, and others. The movie will follow another kind of mix-up, this one where an assassin and a lovable loser are confused for each other at an Airbnb. The Man From Toronto is set to come to Netflix possibly later this year. And after that, she’s going to star in Meet Cute alongside Pete Davidson in a comedy about traveling to the past to fix someone else’s problems. Considering who is involved, this could be a pretty funny flick.

In all, Kaley Cuoco has become one of the true stars in Hollywood right now. Parlaying her work on The Big Bang Theory into another critically acclaimed and fan-favorite series is no small thing. You can stream The Flight Attendant on HBO Max now.
