Hogwarts Legacy was revealed in 2020, quickly becoming one of the most-watched video game trailers of the year. Set in the Wizarding World, players will be able to design their own character and explore the expansive grounds of Hogwarts while learning powerful spells and completing challenges for their houses. While the game takes place a century before the events of the Harry Potter books, students aren’t entirely safe from the powers of darkness. Something wicked is threatening the magical academic institution and gamers will need to get to the bottom of it.
Despite the hyper around Hogwarts Legacymany fans were initially concerned about the involvement of Harry Potter creator JK Rowling following her controversial comments and opinions on the transgender community. Avalanche Software confirmed that Rowling is not attached to the project despite the story taking place within the world it created. “JK Rowling is not directly involved in the creation of the game, however, her extraordinary body of writing is the foundation of all projects in the Wizarding World. This is not a new story from JK Rowling.” Hogwarts Legacy later confirmed that players will be able to create transgender characters through the creation system.
To further distance the game from Rowling, David Haddad, president of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment said, “While JK Rowling is the creator of Harry Potterand we are bringing that to life with the power of Portkey, in many places, she’s a private citizen.” Haddad continued on to say that while he may disagree with her, he believes that she still has a right to hold her own opinion .
Hogwarts Legacy will be available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC this holiday season.
