Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn defends star Chris Pratt against rumors concerning his beliefs circulating across the internet.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn recently spoke out against the rumors concerning star Chris Pratt and his religious beliefs and affiliations.
When a social media user suggested Marvel Studios replace Pratt, Gunn responded, “For what? Because of your made-up, utterly-false beliefs about him? For something that someone else told you about him that’s not true?” He later revealed, “I know the church he currently goes to. Do you? (The answer is you don’t, but you heard from someone who heard from someone who heard from someone where he goes to church, so decided, ‘yeah , okay, I’ll believe this terrible thing I heard online about this celebrity!’)”
Rumors concerning Pratt’s faith and views on the LGBTQ+ community have circulated since at least 2019. Pratt is believed to attend the Zoe Church, affiliated with the controversial Hillsong Church. In 2019, the church was heavily criticized for its stance on homosexuality, which it considers sinful and limits the roles members of the LGBTQ+ community can attain in the church. Pratt has previously responded to these rumors, stating that his church welcomes all people and does not hate any group of people.
Pratt was previously criticized by actor Elliot Page, who called for coverage and discussion of Pratt’s views, as well as those of the Hillsong Church and later wrote, “If you are a famous actor and you belong to an organization that hates a certain group of people, don’t be surprised if someone simply wonders why it’s not addressed,” Page tweeted. “Being anti LGBTQ is wrong, there aren’t two sides. The damage it causes is severe. Full stop. Sending love to all.”
Gunn is known to actively address misinformation on social media and defend those he has worked with from unfair public discourse. The director himself faced intense scrutiny on social media and beyond in 2018, resulting in his removal from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Disney faced immense backlash from Gunn’s fans, as well as a number of major actors and creators, some of which released a joint statement defending Gunn. This ultimately compelled Disney to hire the director.
