A transformed Gillian Anderson appears as Eleanor Roosevelt in the latest trailer for Showtime’s upcoming television series The First Lady.
A newly released clip from Showtime’s The First Lady shows Gillian Anderson as Eleanor Roosevelt. Anderson rose to fame after her breakout performance as Agent Dana Scully in The X Files and she has since appeared in a number of films, television series, and stage productions on Broadway and the West End. Anderson has solidified her reputation as a feminist figure, frequently portraying barrier-breaking characters. More recently, her role in Netflix’s Sex Education as insightful sex therapist Dr. Jean Millburn gained positive reception.
The 30-second Youtube snippet from show time features a nearly unrecognizable Anderson as prominent First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. Opening with Roosevelt sitting demurely as she states in a voiceover, “the name Roosevelt does open doors,” the trailer cuts to a flashback of herself as a young woman, played by Eliza Scanlen, as she is approached by her future husband Franklin. The video highlights Roosevelt’s public and private life as she is thrust into addressing “women’s issues,” which she refuses to speak on when told she should hold a press conference to discuss cleaning. The Showtime original series is set to premiere on April 17.

As an anthology drama, The First Lady will reframe American leadership storytelling by focusing on the political and personal lives of three women who shaped history. Along with Roosevelt, the first season will also highlight the careers of Betty Ford, played by Michelle Pfeiffer, and Michelle Obama, played by Viola Davis. Anderson is no stranger to portraying influential people. She won an Emmy Award in 2021 for her performance as Margaret Thatcher in The Crown and is in the early stages of the development of a project centered on a currently unknown historical figure.
Along with the interweaving stories of the three First Ladies, their respective husbands will also be included in the series. President Franklin Roosevelt is played by Kiefer Sutherland, President Gerald Ford is played by Aaron Eckhart, and President Barack Obama is played by OT Fagbenle. The expansive cast list also features Cailee Spaeny as Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, Dakota Fanning as Susan Ford, Regina Taylor as Marian Shields Robinson, Lexi Underwood as Malia Obama, and Saniyya Sidney as Sasha Obama. Created by Aaron Cooley, Tea first-lady will start with Anderson’s Roosevelt in the ’30s as she navigates her complicated marriage and position as an outspoken public figure.
