Earlier today, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk broke down the San Francisco 49ers’ options with their veteran quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo. In the breakdown, Florio speculated that the current conundrum could force the Bay Area team to do the unthinkable—keep Garoppolo in 2022.
“They could even re-do his deal to convert some of the money he’s due to earn into incentives, based on playing time and/or performance,” Florio wrote. “Let him compete. If he’s better than Lance, let him play.”
Florio wasn’t done, though. He published a second article looking at another of the three possible outcomes. Obviously, the chances of the 49ers landing the haul they hoped to acquire via a trade have greatly diminished. While general manager John Lynch has stated that the team is willing to keep Garoppolo and last year’s No. 3 overall pick, Trey Lance, on the roster if necessary, that is probably a last-resort option.
Garoppolo is set to count nearly $27 million against the salary cap in 2022. So if Lance is the clear starter from here on out, keeping the veteran passer on the roster at that price doesn’t make much sense.
Florio adds that Garoppolo’s recent shoulder surgery, which will keep him from throwing for any team until closer to training camp, surprised the 49ers.
Wrote Florio: “Throw in the fact that Garoppolo had the surgery without consulting with the 49ers, and it makes every team that otherwise would be interested in Garoppolo very leery.”
A source told Florio that the shoulder surgery has kept what could have been several potentially interested teams away. Now, the list of quarterback-needy teams has reduced to the point where a trade looks unlikely, thanks to Garoppolo’s hefty salary and the fact that he isn’t healthy.
“The most likely result, the source predicted, is that the 49ers will have to cut him,” Florio wrote. “With none of Garoppolo’s salary becoming guaranteed until the eve of Week One, the 49ers can wait it out. But they won’t get cap relief without cutting him. And because he’s in the last year of his contract, cutting him would leave behind only $1.4 million in dead money — and it would instantly create more than $25 million in cap space.”
With the initial expectation that everything might be settled by the start of the new league year on March 16, it doesn’t look like the Garoppolo storyline will go away anytime soon.

Florio: Not unthinkable that 49ers QB Trey Lance could ‘take the league by storm’ in 2022
The media is still trying to predict what San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance will be. No one—except the 49ers—saw much of him in 2021. Last year’s No. 3 overall pick started just two games, replacing an injured Jimmy Garoppolo and adding a few scattered reps here and there. That totaled to 178 snaps this past season. That’s hardly enough to make a definitive assessment of a player or accurately predict the young quarterback’s NFL future. People are trying to do that, though. Some look at the limited sample size and say Lance doesn’t look ready. They say he couldn’t possibly take on a starting role after a couple of games featuring some up-and-down moments. Then there was the offseason chatter that Lance isn’t ready and that his development was

Florio: QB conundrum could force 49ers to do the unthinkable
The San Francisco 49ers entered the offseason feeling pretty good about their chances of trading quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and acquiring valuable capital in return. Then one of the craziest offseasons in recent memory occurred. Aaron Rodgers remained with the Green Bay Packers. Russell Wilson headed to the Denver Broncos. There was the almost laughable blink-and-you-missed-it retirement of Tom Brady. Carson Wentz landed with the Washington Commanders. The Houston Texans shipped Deshaun Watson to the Cleveland Browns. Lastly, Matt Ryan found himself with the Indianapolis Colts. The significant list of potentially quarterback-needy teams quickly dwindled, and with it, Garoppolo’s trade value. Then, of course, there was also the surprising shoulder surgery that

Jim Trotter says 49ers not in on Deshaun Watson but outlines unlikely scenario in which that changes
On Tuesday, Jordan Schultz shockingly reported that the San Francisco 49ers were among the teams that planned to meet with Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson, who seeks a trade. The New Orleans Saints, Carolina Panthers, Cleveland Brown, and Atlanta Falcons appear to be in the mix to acquire the three-time Pro Bowler who sat out 2021. Several long-time reporters shot down the 49ers’ involvement, including Matt Maiocco, Peter Schrager, and Albert Breer. San Francisco was not meeting with Watson. On Wednesday, NFL Media’s Jim Trotter also chimed in, saying that the 49ers are not in on the Watson sweepstakes. However, the reporter added that there could be a

49ers, Jets most interested in CB Stephon Gilmore, per report
According to Connor Hughes and a couple of his colleagues at The Athletic, the San Francisco 49ers and New York Jets are believed to be the “most interested” in soon-to-be-free-agent-cornerback Stephon Gilmore. The Las Vegas Raiders are also believed to be interested in the two-time first-team All-Pro and five-time Pro Bowl defender. Upgrading the cornerback position is expected to be a free-agency priority for the 49ers. San Francisco may be waiting to see if they can acquire Gilmore for a small discount after other top available cornerbacks agreed to deals elsewhere. The three teams in on Stephon Gilmore are
